Mimosa pudica, commonly known as the "Shame Plant" or "Sensitive Plant," is a fascinating and delicate species renowned for its unique ability to react to touch by folding its leaves. This tropical plant is native to Central and South America but has gained popularity worldwide due to its intriguing movement and easy care requirements. Despite its delicate appearance, Mimosa pudica is a resilient plant that can thrive in various environments with proper care.

Watering

Mimosa pudica prefers consistently moist soil, but it is important to avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Water the plant regularly, especially during its growing season (spring and summer), ensuring the soil remains damp but not soggy. Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant's growth slows down, allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering sessions.

Light

This plant thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in the morning or late afternoon, but too much direct light can scorch its leaves. Place the Mimosa pudica near a window with filtered sunlight to promote healthy growth. If grown indoors, rotating the plant occasionally will ensure even light exposure.

Temperature

Mimosa pudica is a tropical plant that thrives in warm temperatures ranging from 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C). It is sensitive to cold and should be kept away from drafts, particularly during the winter. If the temperature drops below 60°F (16°C), the plant's growth may slow, and its leaves may start to droop.

Soil Mix

A well-draining soil mix is essential for Mimosa pudica. A blend of potting soil, sand, and perlite or vermiculite is ideal, as it ensures good aeration and prevents water from accumulating around the roots. The soil should retain some moisture without becoming compacted, allowing the plant's roots to breathe and grow effectively.

Humidity

Mimosa pudica prefers a humid environment, similar to its native tropical habitat. Aim to maintain humidity levels between 40% and 60%. If the air is too dry, the plant's leaves may turn brown at the edges. You can increase humidity by misting the plant regularly, placing it on a humidity tray, or using a room humidifier.

Fertilizer

During the growing season, Mimosa pudica benefits from regular feeding with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Fertilize the plant every two to four weeks in the spring and summer. Avoid fertilizing in the winter when the plant is dormant, as excess nutrients can cause fertilizer burn or stunt growth.

Toxicity

Mimosa pudica is considered non-toxic to humans and pets. However, it is still advisable to keep the plant out of reach of curious pets and small children. The plant's spines can be mildly irritating if touched, and its leaves, though non-toxic, are not suitable for consumption.

Caring for Mimosa pudica, the Shame Plant, is a rewarding experience, as this plant offers both beauty and interaction. With the right balance of water, light, temperature, and humidity, along with proper soil and feeding practices, Mimosa pudica can thrive in your home or garden. Whether you're drawn to its responsive nature or its delicate appearance, this plant is sure to be a conversation starter and a delightful addition to your collection.

Bad book for SOA exam, but oh well.
Format: Paperback
While required by Society of Actuaries as the textbook for Short Term Actuarial Models exam, I could not recommend this textbook for any other purposes. Written by two Canadian actuaries, a lot of terms and explanations used in this textbook cannot be transferred into US P&C insurance. It fails to explains insurance's purpose and products effectively and as an intro book with unnecessary sentences to deliver personal thoughts. It is also a mess in following sections on ratemaking and reserving. I cannot sense a flow from this book that guides readers in an approachable manner. Overall, author compromises the size AND the quality.
